I am reminded at the end of this Fall semester of just how significant an impact Talbot and Biola have on our students, their families, the churches they represent, and the congregations in which they serve.
This semester I was blessed with the opportunity to teach two sections of a Bible class called “Faith and Money, a Practical Theology.” The course is based on concepts taken directly from Scripture, and principles found in several Crown Ministry and stewardship texts, including Wes Willmer’s God and Your Stuff (NavPress, 2002; Wes is Biola’s Vice President for Advancement) and Don Coley’s A Steward’s Journey (ASJ, 2005). Primarily, undergraduate juniors and seniors take the class as a Bible elective, but it’s finding its way across academic borders and I had my first Talbot graduate student in class this semester.
Class content includes learning about God’s ownership of all we have (not just the tithe), how culture tries to sell us a bill of goods we really don’t need, and how we as Christians should deal with debt, financing, credit cards, and giving! Anyone want your congregation to know some of those things?!
The amazing thing to me is the impact that a class like this, and hundreds of others offered in the curriculum of the seven schools of Biola University, will have to help craft the worldview of tomorrow’s Christian leaders, pastors, teachers, and parents! Student reviews said how much their eyes had been opened to Scripture, and to the lies that come from our culture. Most encouraging, they related how lessons learned in the class will change how they will act today, and for years to come. I truly believe that we—those in service at Talbot—are a most blessed people! What a privilege it is to teach from the Bible. And as Alumni and friends of Talbot, when you pray, give, and recruit students for this great school, you too share in the partnership of preparing Christian men and women to impact the world for Christ! Thank you!
As we start another calendar year at Talbot, we look forward to seeing how God will use the faculty, staff, students, and alumni of Talbot and Biola to share the great hope of the Lord Jesus Christ until His return. Thank you for joining with us in this important alliance!
